The government of Eritrea has allegedly made it a compulsion that all Eritrean men must marry two or more wives or face life imprisonment.
The Eritrean government was said to have taken this stand because of the acute shortage of men occasioned by casualties recorded during the civil war with Ethiopia in which the country lost a great number of men.
According to Ladun Liadi’s blog, the government is fully in support of polygamy in the country.
The statement said to have been released by the Eritrean department of Religious Affairs, stated that ‘’given the circumstances in which the country is experiencing in terms of men shortage, the Eritrean department of Religious Affairs has decided on the following ”
That every man shall marry at least two women and the man who refuses to do so shall be subjected to life imprisonment with hard labour.
The woman who tries to prevent her husband from marrying another wife shall be jailed for life.
The May 1998 to June 2000 Eritrean-Ethiopian war saw about 150,000 soldiers killed from both sides but having a greater impact on the male population in the tiny Eritrea nation who were then about 4 million people.
